My Heart Overflows

cross-1448946_1920

My heart overflows with a joyful theme
I address these verses to Christ my King
Each thought rushing to an inviting stream
Joining others pouring out prayers and praise
Tears voicing words we’re all trying to say
Rolling whispers shouting mercy and grace

Behind the lines

My heart overflows with a pleasing theme;
I address my verses to the king;
my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe.
(Psalm 45:1 ESV)

Song of Joy

choir-303302_1280

Come clap your hands and sing a joyful song
For the Lord is King over all the earth
Let all nations bow before the throne
And all people have glory on their tongue

Song of Joy
Receive our words of praise
Song of Joy
Who called us from the grave
Song of Joy
The victory is won
Song of Joy
Death could not hold the Son

Sing for salvation with shouts of amen
Sing of great mercy again and again
For He has ascended with trumpet sound
Make a joyful noise in a psalm to Him

Seated supreme over heaven and earth
Reigning forever on His royal throne
Highly exalted let each one proclaim
Their own song of grace to describe His worth

Behind the lines

Psalm 47

Sing praises to God, sing praises!
Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is the King of all the earth;
sing praises with a psalm!
(Psalm 47:6-7)

Be Still My Soul

pexels-photo-267423

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side
bear patiently the cross of grief or pain
leave to thy God to order and provide
in ev’ry change He faithful will remain
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heav’nly Friend
thro’ thorny ways leads to a joyful end

Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
to guide the future as He has the past
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake
all now mysterious shall be bright at last
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
His voice, who ruled them while He dwelt below

Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart
and all is darkened in the veil of tears
then shalt thou better know His love, His heart
who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears
Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay
from His own fullness all He takes away

Be still, my soul: the hour is hast’ning on
when we shall be forever with the Lord
when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone
sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past
all safe and blessed we shall meet at last

Behind the lines

One of my favorite hymns to grieve by, especially the passing of a loved one. It was written by Katharina von Schlegel in the 1700s and little is known about her life which in many ways makes it even sweeter.

Dedicated to Rowena Appleton Taylor who passed away yesterday at the age of 69.

Below is a YouTube video of a traditional a cappella boys choir, Libera, singing it complete with lyrics.

Joyful Groaning

sunset-3325080_1920That which we all long for,
Is Joy we have not seen,
It is the beauty of pure love,
In the face of Majesty.

Christ, our greatest longing,
Intense Joy beyond all,
Meets desire to be satisfied,
Since the dark dawn of the fall.

Come again, Bright Morning,
Come joyful, Lord Jesus,
For until your faithful return,
There is no resting in us.

Growing hunger endures,
Like the thirst of dry land,
Nothing in the world is enough,
To fulfill the heart of man.

We plead for small glimpses,
We struggle to truly see,
For beauty is clouded by sin,
While joy is stained with ugly.

So we groan on our way,
Longing, crying, praying,
Dying to enter forever,
Where True Joy is preparing.

Behind the lines

For the times we struggle for joy, yet know there is hope and joy to come. Where waiting with patience means a joyful groan.

[18] For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. [19] For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. [20] For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope [21] that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. [22] For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. [23] And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. [24] For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? [25] But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience (Romans 8:18-25 ESV).

Joy & Peace in Believing

When troubles come can we still rejoice and sing?

William Cowper (1731–1800) answers the question below. Christian, be encouraged and take heart!

Sometimes a light surprises
The Christian while he sings;
It is the Lord who rises
With healing on His wings;
When comforts are declining,
He grants the soul again
A season of clear shining,
To cheer it after rain.

In holy contemplation
We sweetly then pursue
The theme of God’s salvation,
And find it ever new;
Set free from present sorrow,
We cheerfully can say,
E’en let the unknown tomorrow
Bring with it what it may!

It can bring with it nothing,
But He will bear us through;
Who gives the lilies clothing,
Will clothe His people too;
Beneath the spreading heavens
No creature but is fed;
And He who feeds the ravens
Will give His children bread.

Though vine nor fig tree neither
Their wonted fruit shall bear,
Though all the field should wither,
Nor flocks nor herds be there:
Yet God the same abiding,
His praise shall tune my voice;
For, while in Him confiding,
I cannot but rejoice.

Hope

sunrise-1756274_1920

Lord, hear my prayer and preserve me,
Where is Your presence in this pain?
For I’m nothing apart from You,
You are my Hope in Sorrow’s grave.

You are my Hope, my only Hope,
You are my Hope, my only Hope,
My Portion for this day,
Shelter from sun and rain,
Joy through any pain,
My Hope beyond the grave.

Jesus, You are The Path of Hope,
You will never abandon me,
And all the problems in this life,
Will be lost in eternity.

When I lie down in the darkness,
Joy and pleasure will be complete,
When I see Your frightful beauty,
And find Hope at Your mercy seat.

You are my Hope, my only Hope,
You are my Hope, my only Hope,
You are my Hope, my only Hope,
You’re my only Hope.

Behind the lines

Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.”

As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight. The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips.

The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me. I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.

You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (Psalm 16 ESV)
