Jesus, Friend

love-699480_1920

Jesus, the Lamb of God with us
Betrayed, denied by friends He loved
Bleeding, dying, buried, then raised
Death conquered by Power and Grace

Jesus, Friend of sinners and thieves
Of which I am the the worst of these
My sin, my debt, my nakedness
Gone, paid, now dressed in Righteousness

Behind the lines

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another. ~John 15:12-17

Fiercer than Fire

(Song of Solomon 8:6-7, Deuteronomy 4:23-24, Ephesians 1:13-14)

There is no love like Yours, O Lord,
Your love is fiercer than fire,
Jealous flames flash from Your breath,
Your love is stronger than death.

Yes, I am yours and You are mine,
You bought me with Your own life,
Death will never tear us apart,
For Your seal is on my heart.

Own my heart, O Lord, own my heart,
No other and no wealth,
Let there be nothing else.

Your love is fiercer than fire,
No waters can quench Your love,
Your love is fiercer than fire,
Your love, O Lord,
Your love is fiercer than fire.

You are Love, O Lord, You are Love,
Death’s river cannot sweep it away,
You are Love, O Lord, You are Love,
You are Love.

Behind the lyrics

I recently read through the Song of Solomon (and had fun citing some of the lines to my wife over breakfast). One of the passages that really struck me in this love story was a short hymn to love spoken by the bride (8:6-7).

This continues my recent theme of the Bride of Christ (see Longing).  My favorite line is “for love is strong as death” for we know Christ died for us in love and then conquered death.  Death and dying is such a strong negative emotion, but His love is greater. His love is stronger than death.

Set me as a seal upon your heart,
as a seal upon your arm,
for love is strong as death,
jealousy is fierce as the grave.

Its flashes are flashes of fire,
the very flame of the LORD.
Many waters cannot quench love,
neither can floods drown it.

If a man offered for love
all the wealth of his house,
he would be utterly despised.
(Song of Solomon 8:6-7 ESV)
