Joy & Peace in Believing

When troubles come can we still rejoice and sing?

William Cowper (1731–1800) answers the question below. Christian, be encouraged and take heart!

Sometimes a light surprises
The Christian while he sings;
It is the Lord who rises
With healing on His wings;
When comforts are declining,
He grants the soul again
A season of clear shining,
To cheer it after rain.

In holy contemplation
We sweetly then pursue
The theme of God’s salvation,
And find it ever new;
Set free from present sorrow,
We cheerfully can say,
E’en let the unknown tomorrow
Bring with it what it may!

It can bring with it nothing,
But He will bear us through;
Who gives the lilies clothing,
Will clothe His people too;
Beneath the spreading heavens
No creature but is fed;
And He who feeds the ravens
Will give His children bread.

Though vine nor fig tree neither
Their wonted fruit shall bear,
Though all the field should wither,
Nor flocks nor herds be there:
Yet God the same abiding,
His praise shall tune my voice;
For, while in Him confiding,
I cannot but rejoice.

Dark Distress

thunderstorm-3430471_1920

Though clouds once hid the moon and stars,
And close friends followed other gods,
When sadness nearly crushed my heart,
You have answered and been my guide.

Now I come blinded by distress,
Stumbling and searching for Your hand,
Though I can’t see, I’m still convinced,
You’ll lead me through the dark again.

Revive my soul, restore the peace,
Extend Your hand with scars of joy,
And when it’s time for me to sleep,
May all the darkness be destroyed?

For You make me dwell in safety,
Your grace protects my doubting heart,
The forces that want to claim me,
Can never break Your sovereign arm.

Behind the lines

Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!

O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah

But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself;
the LORD hears when I call to him. Be angry, and do not sin;
ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah

Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the LORD. There are many who say, “Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O LORD!”

You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. (Psalm 4 ESV)
