Rescued (Three Words)

planet-2985148_1920

Sin and death and enemies,
Three words who’ve long hated me,
Jesus, You have conquered these,
You have conquered all of these,
To rescue me?

Rescued, redeemed, and saved,
Three words to sing now,
And shout beyond the grave.

You are my strength,
Through ev’ry need,
Jesus, You have set me free,
You are the Strength,
Who rescued me,
You rescued me.

My Refuge, Fortress, and Rock,
Three words for the Son of God,
Jesus, You were cursed and mocked,
While You hid me in Your arms,
To rescue me?

Faith and hope and love abide,
Three words live because You died,
Jesus, how could You delight,
How could you delight and die,
To rescue me?

Psalm 18

My Redeemer

This is the last hymn Philip Bliss (1838 -1876) wrote before he died in a train wreck caused by a bridge collapse (and subsequent fire). He survived the initial crash, but was killed trying (unsuccessfully) to rescue his wife. The lyrics were found in his belongings after the accident (Source:  Cyberhymnal and others).

I will sing of my Redeemer,
And His wondrous love to me;
On the cruel cross He suffered,
From the curse to set me free.

Sing, oh sing, of my Redeemer,
With His blood, He purchased me.
On the cross, He sealed my pardon,
Paid the debt, and made me free.

I will tell the wondrous story,
How my lost estate to save,
In His boundless love and mercy,
He the ransom freely gave.

I will praise my dear Redeemer,
His triumphant power I’ll tell,
How the victory He giveth
Over sin, and death, and hell.

I will sing of my Redeemer,
And His heav’nly love to me;
He from death to life hath brought me,
Son of God with Him to be.

He wrote both words and music to such hymns as the following:

Almost Persuaded, Dare to Be a Daniel, Hallelujah ‘Tis Done!, Hallelujah, What a Saviour!, Hold the Fort, Jesus Loves Even Me, Let the Lower Lights Be Burning, Once for All, The Light of the World Is Jesus, Whosoever Will, and Wonderful Words of Life.

He wrote only the words for My Redeemer and wrote only the music for I Gave My Life for Thee, It Is Well with My Soul, and Precious Promise.

Almighty Eternal

Almighty Eternal, Your praises we sing,
For who is like You our God and King?
No one has seen all Your splendor and light,
But, O Holy One, what a majestic sight…

Almighty Eternal, You never change,
Great are You, LORD, and great to be praised;
You’re perfect in power, wisdom and love,
All glory to You in the heavens above.

Almighty Eternal, the LORD is His name,
All glorious, victorious, may we spread Your fame;
You’re the Alpha-Omega, beginning and end,
Unchanging, Creator, Redeemer and Friend.

Precious Redeemer, the glorious Son,
By Your sacrifice, victory won,
Our Bridegroom, and Savior, You came to die,
God sent God to redeem His bride.

Almighty Eternal, the LORD is His name,
All glorious, victorious, may we spread Your fame;
You’re the Alpha-Omega, beginning and end,
Unchanging, Creator…

Your great power,
You spoke and made all,
Heaven and earth,
Your glorious plan.

Your glory demands our praise.
Your glory demands our praise.
Your glory demands our praise.

Almighty Eternal, How glorious is He?
One God, Three Persons, in Trinity.
God the Father, the Spirit, Son,
Forever together, in harmony – One.

Almighty Eternal, the LORD is His name,
All glorious, victorious, may we spread Your fame;
You’re the Alpha-Omega, beginning and end,
Unchanging, Creator, Redeemer and Friend.

Your glory demands our praise.
Your glory demands our praise.
Your glory demands our praise.

Behind the Lines

Co-written with David Ennis, Shane Jackson, Drew Pearce, and Kevin Schultz.

Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel
and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts:
“I am the first and I am the last;
besides me there is no god.

Who is like me? Let him proclaim it.
Let him declare and set it before me,
since I appointed an ancient people.
Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen.

Fear not, nor be afraid;
have I not told you from of old and declared it?
And you are my witnesses!
Is there a God besides me?
There is no Rock; I know not any.”
(Isaiah 44:6-8 ESV)

Job’s Song

tornado-1193184_1920

I am reduced to dry tears,
Everything of worth is gone,
Should I curse Almighty God,
And dread the day of my birth?

For God is not like a man,
How can I contend with Him?
And what of these friends I have,
Am I already condemned?

Is there not an Arbiter,
Who knows my sorrow and pain,
A Savior who goes between,
The Holy One and my woes?

For God is not like a man,
How can I contend with Him?
And what of this Friend I have,
Whose grace I can’t comprehend?

Creative God of Wonders,
Commander of the Morning,
The Redeemer of lost men,
You are Perfect in Power.

Behind the lines

Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and he who testifies for me is on high.

My friends scorn me; my eye pours out tears to God, that he would argue the case of a man with God, as a son of man does with his neighbor.

For when a few years have come I shall go the way from which I shall not return. (Job 16:19-22 ESV)

For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth.

And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another.

My heart faints within me!  (Job 19:25-27 ESV)
